Special 10 Year Observance 2008-09

Stop The Hate -- Fight Bias & Hate on Campus

Between June of 1998 and April of 1999, three of the most notorious hate crimes in our recent history occurred in the United States. James Byrd Jr. was murdered in Jasper, Texas by three white supremacists. Matthew Shepard was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming after being tied to a fence and beaten. Two high school seniors killed twelve of their peers and one teacher at Columbine High School. In the 10 years since this tragic 18-month period, too many others have become victims of hate and have been murdered including Sean Kennedy, Gwen Araujo, Lawrence King, Angie Zapata, Satendar Singh, and Jeremy Waggoner, just to name a few.

Stop the Hate dedicates the 2008-2009 academic year to the memory of all victims of bias and hate and has scheduled two special trainings, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast, as part of the "10 Year Observance of Remembering the Legacy of Matthew Shepard." Since 2000, we have equipped over 1000 trainers across the United States on college campuses. Take Action. Become a Stop the Hate Trainer. Learn how to prevent and respond to bias and hate crimes on your campus.
