Stop the Hate is an educational program founded in 2000 by Shane Windmeyer as a volunteer of ACUI and has consistently grown under his leadership with ACUI. Stop the Hate provides trainings and resources on how to prevent/respond to hate crimes and bias incidents at colleges and universities across the United States. Since its inception, Stop the Hate has trained over 950 trainers from all over the country. The program is comprised of educational partnerships from social justice and civil rights organizations that include the Anti-Defamation League, Campus Pride, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Wilbron Institute and the Higher Education Center for Drug and Other Alcohol Abuse and Violence Prevention.
“The inception of this program would not have been possible without the support and commitment of ACUI over the last 7 years. They will continue to support Stop the Hate as a valued educational partner,” said Windmeyer.
Under the new organization, Windmeyer will serve as Executive Director of Stop The Hate through Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit 501(c)3 for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students across the United States. Greg Miraglia, Dean of Criminal Justice Training at Napa Valley College and Matthew Shepard Foundation Advisory Board member will serve as the National Program Coordinator. Stop The Hate will maintain its strength and focus with its premier training and resources. Plans for the future include prioritizing online delivery of resources and new programs focused more on prevention of bias and hate on campus.
Judy Shepard, Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation said, “We are very pleased to be intimately involved in the Stop the Hate program. The curriculum is challenging, engaging, and gives educators the tools they need to make a real difference on our college campuses.”
“Today, more than ever, Stop The Hate is desperately needed to prevent horrific hate crimes such as the one recently reported in Oxnard, California and at Virginia Tech. Educational institutions are no place for hate or bigotry. Campuses must always be a place where diversity is embraced and where differences provide richness,” said Windmeyer.
Stop The Hate supports colleges and universities in preventing and combating hate on campus as well as fostering the development of community. The national program serves as the premiere source of anti-hate educational resources for higher education institutions and campus communities.
